The attach took place during the busy hours of the day and according to eye witnesses’ reports, there were around 30 to 35 people present at the government office at that time.
According to the details provided by the Mardan District Police Officer (DPO) Faisal Shahzad, the attacker first fired shots at the gate of the office, before entering it. Bullet marks at the gate confirm this fact. Due to the shots fired, panic was created and people started running away from the site of the shooting. The suicide bomber detonated his explosives after entering the computer section of the office. Shahzad also confirmed the fact that around eight to 10 kilograms of explosives were used in the bomb. Initial investigations also show that the bomber was between 18 and 19 years of age.
According to initial reports, 18 people were reported injured and out of them, three were in critical condition. However, one of the wounded later succumbed to his injuries and could not be saved by the doctors. The injured also included a journalist and a policeman and they are all being treated at the Mardan Medical Complex and the District Headquarters hospital.
So far no one has claimed responsibility for the attack. Police have cordoned off the area of the blast and have launched an investigation.
