Seven Policemen Killed In Karachi While Guarding Polio Workers
Wednesday, April 20th, 2016 8:39:41 by modousarrTwo different attacks in Orangi Town on Wednesday afternoon led to the death of seven policemen.
A police vehicle deployed to protect polio vaccination officials was attacked by unknown gunmen riding on motorcycles. The four police officials in the vehicle died instantly, according to police sources.
Subsequent to attacking the vehicle, the gunmen further went on to shoot three other policemen who were on duty in the same vicinity, eyewitnesses claimed. All three yielded to their wounds while on the way to the hospital.
However, none of the polio workers have been reported injured.
The anti-polio campaign in the area was immediately put on hold and law enforcement agencies secured off the area.
The campaign against polio in Pakistan has been susceptible to dangers, with insurgents attacking health personnel who are accused of being spies.
In February, a polio worker was shot and in January, 15 people were killed by a suicide bomber outside a polio eradication center Quetta.
Both Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only countries in the world that have been transferring the polio virus to each other.
