Teacher on trial for sexually abusing young boys in Turkey
Wednesday, April 20th, 2016 4:24:35 by fatimaarshadA 54-year-old man is currently on trial for allegedly assaulting young boys under his care at two religious foundations in the Turkish city of Karaman. This sex scandal has rocked the entire country, as one of those religious institutes is linked to Turkey’s ruling party.
The two institutes at which the alleged suspect worked are; Ensar Foundation and Kaimder. Both these institutes are currently under investigation.
The trial of the accused teacher will begin today and according to the details of the case, the assaults started back in 2012. They went on undiscovered till 2015 and finally one of the victims’ families spoke out and the horrendous crime was discovered.
The details also showed that all the victims were boys between the ages of 10 to 12 years of age and till now, ten such cases have been discovered.
According to Oktay Yilmaz, the lawyer who is representing the victims’ families, the boys were so scared in the beginning, that none of them spoke up about it. He said that this is the reason why the abuse went on for so long.
The case turned political, when the country’s minister for family affairs, Sema Ramazanoglu made a comment about the incident being ‘one-off’ and that the opposition parties were just trying to taint the current government through this case.
The opposition parties later accused Ramazanoglu of negligence in preventing violence against women and children and she barely survived a censure motion in parliament.
