PM Sharif Unwavering In Attempt To Clear His Children In Wake Of Panama Storm
Thursday, April 21st, 2016 10:18:41 by modousarrIt was reported that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is resilient in his strides to clear the name of his children from accusations of money laundering and tax evasion, following the Panama Papers leak.
Nawaz seems to be moving fast, pushing the government to perform the task as soon as possible, be it through the judicial commission he announced earlier this month or through other means.
According to aides of the prime minister and the ruling party office-bearers, if the opposition parties cannot agree on formulating a judicial commission, a joint parliamentary committee as suggested by the PPP could be formed instead.
Based on the information given by the media wing of the Prime Minister’s office, Sharif, after his return from London overnight, spent the day in the family wing of his office.
A federal government legal adviser stated, “We have done our homework and the next move will be made after the PM is briefed — in a day or two — about talks with leaders of parliamentary parties that Senator Ishaq Dar has held over the past few days.”
The adviser went on explaining the nature of his work claiming that the job demanded creating the question that will be presented before the judicial commission, questioning whether any law had been contravened by those who had supposedly set up offshore accounts or companies.
According to the adviser, there were indeed jurisdictional issues with regards to the commission as no international banking channel or financial institution would bow to a local commission.
“The government is also brainstorming the option of formally asking for the CJP’s input if the commission can be formed under his aegis or a serving judge of the Supreme Court,” stated a PML-N lawmaker partaking in the discussion over the government’s probable response to opposition parties.
He added that should the disagreement with the opposition continue, there was a high chance that the government would carry on with the commission.
He was certain that irrespective of the actions implemented, the issues of the Panama Papers will be deliberated legally so that the Prime Minister’s three children will be free from any future problems.
According to the leaks, Hassan Nawaz Sharif, Hussain Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz Sharif are the legal beneficiaries of the companies set up in the British Virgin Islands.
Asma Jahangir, a human rights activist, was of the opinion that it was more of a political issue than a legal one and suggested that it should be dealt with politically without disrupting the country.
“Everybody knows that since the Ziaul Haq years, corruption has been politicized and everybody who could, including the Sharifs, have made money and laundered it in tax heavens.”
With regards to how the money was sent to the UK or other places in Europe, she said: “one can see streets after streets in the UK and Spain, where people offer services to transfer money through informal channels.”
She considered the whole matter a moral one as politicians in the west had quit their jobs and others had brought forward their tax details.
This, however, is not the case in Pakistan, she said.
“Suppose, if the present government goes home, we will have another similar lot in their place, until and unless people start hating corrupt politicians.”
