General Raheel Sharif calls IGP Sindh; assures him terrorism will be eliminated from all provinces

Chief of the Army Staff, General Raheel Sharif called up the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Sindh AD Khawaja, and assured him that terrorism will be rooted out from every nook and corner of the country. Sharif made this call to convey his condolences to the families of the slain police officers, who became a victim of the latest attack against the polio drive.

During his call, the army chief “expressed his grief and sorrow with the heirs of martyred police personnel and he also conveyed his condolences to the families”, said a statement from the Karachi police media cell.

It was also reported that Sharif appreciated the Sindh Police for their bravery and assured the IG that the army would always support the police in every aspect.

The attack took place on Wednesday, as policemen were on duty to provide protection to the polio team in the Orangi area. Unidentified gunmen shot dead seven police officers in two separate incidents and later fled the area. The attacks took place within 600 meters of each other and the same group is believed to be behind both these attacks.

The polio team which was performing their duty in Orangi Town was safely transferred to another location. Despite this set-back, policemen are still performing their duties and the polio drive will also continue.

According to initial reports, the killings are believed to be carried out by the same group that had earlier targeted four Rangers in Baldia Town and two Military Police officers on MA Jinnah Road. However, nothing can be said conclusively till the time investigations are complete.
