Chhotu shifted to Islamabad for further investigations
Friday, April 22nd, 2016 4:38:40 by fatimaarshadAfter surrendering to the Pakistan Army in Rajanpur, Ghulam Rasool, alias Chhotu, has been shifted to the federal capital. According to sources, Chhotu and some of his gang members were flown in to Islamabad on Thursday so that they could be interrogated further.
The Punjab government has also set up a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) headed by Atta Muhammad Khan, a Dera Ghazi Khan District Police Officer. The aim of the JIT is to interrogate Chhotu and find out important details from him including whether he had links with any political parties.
The JIT will also evaluate why the operation by the police was so ill-planned and where were the lags.
Members of Counter Terrorism Department and intelligence agencies are also part of the JIT. Reports and findings from the JIT will be presented to the government after the investigations are complete.
An operation against the Chhotu gang was started in the beginning of this month by the police. However, the preparations to deal with this notorious group were not adequate and eventually the plan backfired. As a result, six police officers lost their lives while 24 others were taken hostage.
That is the time when the army had to step in and take control of the operation. The army intervened on 16th April and the gang was given a few days’ deadline to surrender. Chhotu and his gang eventually laid down arms on Tuesday. The hostages held by the gang were also released safely.
