The Leader of the notorious Chotoo gang along with 13 members of his enterprise have surrended unconditionally to the army on Wednesday according to a military spokesman.

This came after a successful military operation Zarb-i-Ahan which also lead to the successful release of 24 policemen taken hostage by the gang.

The army spokesman said there will be a continued presence in the area until all gang members have been neutralized, and their strongholds eliminated.

The police launched operation Zarb-i-Ahan after seven policemen were killed and 24 taken hostage, which prompted the army to take over the operation.

The gang was given a deadline to put down their arms and release the hostages by Monday failing which the Army warned of a military offensive.

Police sources revealed that Chotoo asked for safe passage to Dubai for him and his family and some accomplices in exchange for the safe release of the hostages.

The Story Behind the Chotoo Gang

Ghulam Rasool alias Chotoo, worked formally for the Punjab police as an informer, that used to give police information about gang activity in the Rajanpur and Muzaffargarh areas.

He is of the Bakrani clan of the Mazari tribe and was able to successfully integrate other small but formidable gangs into his organization, such as Bilal alias Bilali Jaakha, Baba Long, Gumani Gopang, Sindhi group, Bosans of Muzaffargrah and Khalid Kajlani.

The Chotoo gang was able to gain the support and loyalty of the people residing in its stronghold around the riverine area of Kachi Jamal in Rajanpur. He is somewhat of a local hero who never conducted any criminal activities in his hometown making it difficult for police to find anyone that would volunteer information to aid the police. They made the area a no-go for the police and successfully repelled two previous attempts by the police to neutralize them.
