Celebrations over the birth of a baby boy turned bitter as members and well-wishers of the family died after eating sweets celebrating the boy’s birth.

The incident took place in Karor Lal Esan area in Punjab province on April, 17, 2016, when the grandfather of the new-born bought sweets from a local sweets vendor. The grandfather, identified as Umar Hayat bought the sweets to feed the guests who came to see the boy. However, it was soon discovered that the sweets were poisoned as 10 people died from consuming them on the same day.

According to the latest reports, the death toll from consuming the poisoned sweets has risen to 23.

“The death toll from consumption of the sweets has now risen to 23, and 52 people are still being treated at various hospitals,” local police official Munir Ahmed told reporters on Monday.

The dead include the boy’s father and seven of his uncles. The mother of the baby boy did not consume the sweets and is said to be unaffected by the incident.

Another police officer by the name of Rameez Bukhari, confirmed the incident and also reported that so far, three people have been arrested. Those arrested include two brothers who run the bakery and a worker who reportedly made the sweets.

Bukhari also said that it is being speculated that the worker may have inadvertently added pesticides to the sweet mix.

“There was a pesticide shop close by which was being renovated, and the owner had left his pesticides at the bakery for safe keeping,” said Bukhari.
“A baker may have used a small packet in the sweet mixture,” he said, but added that police were awaiting the results of laboratory testing.

UPDATE:
Three more victims of poisonous sweets incident died at the Jinnah Hospital and the death toll has now reached 27.
