The attack on Tuesday outside the National Directorate for Security building in Kabul was claimed by the Taliban and had killed 64 people and injured over 300 others.

Pakistan condemned the attack hours after it took place.

The Foreign Office, in a statement, said, “We extend our heartfelt sympathies and condolences to those who have lost their loved ones and pray for early recovery of the injured.”

The Afghan President, Ashraf Ghani vowed “vengeance for each drop of blood spilled” hours after the attack. His chief executive, Abdullah Abdullah, cancelled a visit to Pakistan scheduled for May 2nd, voicing the findings of a preliminary investigation.

Afghanistan’s deputy presidential spokesman, Dawa Khan Menapal, was quoted on the Voice of America radio, to have said that Pakistan encouraged and equipped the Haqqani network that executed the attack.

“Attacks such as this clearly undermine US, Afghan and Pakistani efforts to promote peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan,” Ms Trudeau said.

The US official denied the suggestions of a journalist who said that the United States gave the leeway for Pakistan to continue supporting the insurgents by refusing to publicly criticize its policies.

According to Ms. Trudeau, Pakistan had maintained that it would not categorize terrorist groups “and we continue to call on them to live up to that commitment”.

Upon being asked if “words match Pakistan’s actions”, the official said, “I think words matter and we continue to encourage them to have their actions match those words.”
