Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s name was erroneously added to Panama Papers: ICIJ

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s name has been removed from all the news stories of Panama Papers. The name was removed by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) because it was erroneously added.

The ICIJ made the clarification in recent posts but at the same time, it was mentioned that Sharif’s children do have controls in offshore companies. The Prime Minister came under a lot of criticism after the Panama Papers were leaked and his name was included in various news stories which claimed that him and his children have undeclared off-shore assets.

In its earlier stories titled ‘Panama Papers; The Power Players’ and ‘Giant Leak of Offshore Financial Records Exposes Global Array of Crime and Corruption”, the ICIJ had cited the PM’s name and said that he controls offshore companies.

The exact citations about Nawaz Sharif in those stories were as follows; “The files exposed offshore companies controlled by the prime ministers of Iceland and Pakistan, the king of Saudi Arabia and the children of the president of Azerbaijan.”

The ICIJ has now issued a clarification statement which reads as follows; “Due to an editing error, a sentence in an earlier version of this story implied that the prime minister of Pakistan controlled an offshore company that appeared in the Panama Papers. It is his children who control the offshore companies.”

The ICIJ website posted this update below the abovementioned stories; “Hasan and Hussain Nawaz Sharif’s visualizations were updated on April 21, 2016.”

Apparently, the ICIJ made these corrections after a PML-N MNA by the name of Daniyal Aziz, wrote a complaint to the ICIJ about the discrepancies in its reports.
