COAS orders inquiry into deceased MQM worker’s death

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif ordered an inquiry to uncover the cause of death of deceased Mutahidda Qaumi Movement (MQM) activist Aftab Ahmed. Ahmed died in the custody of Rangers while he was being held on a 90-day remand for interrogation.

General Raheel Sharif himself took notice of the incident and while giving out instructions to hold the inquiry, he even said that ‘justice must be done’.

Meanwhile, the Rangers released a statement in which it was revealed that an unspecified number of officials have been suspended for their ‘suspected involvement’ in Ahmed’s death. The exact numbers and names of these officials will not be released to the public.

The Director General (DG) of Rangers Major General Bilal Akber accepted on Tuesday that Aftab Ahmed was tortured while he was in custody. However, the official stance of the paramilitary force still remains that Ahmed eventually died of a heart attack.

Talk of Rangers’ suspected torture on Ahmed erupted after pictures of his corpse started making rounds on the internet. The pictures clearly showed marks on his body from extreme torture.

The post mortem has been performed on Ahmed’s body but so far the result is being withheld from public. MQM workers are also not accepting the cause of death as being heart attack and instead they are convinced that Ahmed died due to extreme torture. MQM has rejected the post-mortem examination report and have demanded an independent inquiry commission to determine the real cause of Ahmed’s death.
