Ali Haider Gilani rescued from Ghazi in a joint US-Afghan operation
Tuesday, May 10th, 2016 3:47:44 by fatimaarshadThe son of former Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, has been recovered from Afghanistan after three years of his abduction. Ali Haider Gilani was kidnapped from a pre-election rally in Multan and since then, he had remained in the custody of Taliban.
The news of Gilani’s recovery was first told by Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari in a tweet. Shortly after the tweet, the Foreign Office in Islamabad released a statement confirming the good news.
“The Afghan National Security Adviser, Mr. Mohammad Hanif Atmar, in a telephone call to the Adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs, Mr. Sartaj Aziz, informed that Mr. Ali Haider Gilani son of Mr. Yusuf Raza Gilani, former Prime Minister of Pakistan, has been recovered today in a joint operation carried out by the Afghan and US security forces in Ghazni, Afghanistan,” said the statement from the Foreign Office.
It has been reported that Gilani will be sent to Pakistan after a required medical check-up. He has been shifted to the Bagram Airbase from where he will embark on his journey home.
Gilani was kidnapped on May 9, 2013, during a rally in his hometown of Multan. He was seized by the Taliban in a black Honda car amid gunfire which ended up killing his secretary and bodyguard.
During his time in captivity, Gilani spoke to his family only once on May 24, 2015. After that, there was no news of him till the time of his recovery.
News of Gilani’s recovery was met with a lot of jubilation and relief. Party workers danced and fed sweets to each other as soon as they found out about Gilani’s safe recovery.
