Ali Haider Gilani prepares to come home
Wednesday, May 11th, 2016 11:57:42 by fatimaarshadAli Haider Gilani, son of former Prime Minister, Yousuf Raza Gilani, was recently recovered from the Taliban after spending three years in their captivity. Haider was rescued from the area of Ghazni in Afghanistan through a joint operation of the US and Afghan forces.
According to the latest reports, Haider has been handed over to the Pakistan officials in Kabul, and he is preparing to come back to Pakistan today.
A special aircraft left Islamabad for Kabul in order to retrieve Haider and bring him back to his home country. Haider’s twin brother Kasim Gilani and senior protocol officials of the Foreign Office have also gone to Kabul to bring him back.
Before leaving for Kabul, Kasim Gilani posted a recent picture of his brother in Kabul in which he looks jubilant to be free again. Haider Gilani had to undergo a thorough medical examination after his release and only then was he given the go-ahead to head home.
The news of Ali Haider Gilani’s release was first made public by the Pakistan People’s Party Chairman, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari in a tweet. After that, the Foreign Office released a statement confirming this good news.
Ali Haider Gilani was kidnapped by suspected Taliban militants back in May 2013 in his hometown, Multan. He was campaigning for the upcoming elections when the kidnappers opened fire on his entourage and ended up killing his body guard and secretary before taking him away in a black Honda.
During his time in captivity, Haider talked to his family only once in May, 2015.
News of his release was met with relief and jubilation back home. Wishes for the Gilani family have been pouring in from the entire country after Haider’s release.
