The arrests took place on Tuesday and so far the names of the officers are being kept confidential.
It was reported by a source in Sindh Rangers that the issue of Ahmed’s death while in custody, is being taken very seriously within the force. Thorough investigations were conducted as soon as the regrettable incident took place and as a result of those investigations, five of the officers were arrested. The officers’ physical remand will also be taken if it is deemed necessary.
It was also reported by the source, that the code of conduct was badly violated in Aftab Ahmed’s case. The Rangers have been detaining people for investigations since long, but this is the first time that such an incident of torture was reported.
The arrest of the five officers comes after the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif ordered a thorough investigation into the case. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had also instructed Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan to contact the Sindh government to conduct a judicial inquiry into this case.
The Rangers had taken Aftab Ahmed on physical remand just three days before his death. Initially the cause of his death was reported as cardiac arrest but post mortem report showed that 30 to 40 percent of his body was congested due to bruises.
