Lodhran journalist gunned down for supporting love marriage

A journalist belonging from Lodhran was killed in broad daylight for supporting a couple who had married for love. The veteran journalist, identified as 36-year-old Ajmal Joyia, was on a bike with a friend when his assailants came on a bike and opened fire on him.

According to the details provided by the police, Joyia was travelling with a friend, named Ali Hassan, on a motorcycle in Kehror Pucca, when they were attacked by five armed men on three motorcycles. The men opened fire indiscriminately and as a result Joyia received six bullets while Hassan received two.

The victims were immediately rushed to the Kehror Pucca DHQ hospital where the journalist succumbed to his injuries despite the doctors’ best efforts. Hassan still remains in a critical condition. The journalist’s body was handed over to his family after the completion of formalities.

After the shooting, the police team arrived at the scene and gathered evidence and eye-witness accounts. An FIR of the incident was registered and the complainant was Joyia’s father, Nazar Muhammad, who claimed that his son’s murderers are the Sial brothers.

According to Muhammad, Iqbal Sial, Riaz Sial, Abbas Sial and two other unidentified men are the ones who killed his son. He added the reason of their animosity was that Joyia supported the Sial brothers’ sister, Sughra Bibi, who had married her boyfriend.

Joyia had been threatened with dire consequences by the Sial brothers for repeatedly extending his support to the beleaguered couple. He had also raised the issue in the press and approached district authorities to provide the couple with ample security since they had been threatened by Sughra’s family.

Joyia had worked for several national newspapers for the past 12-years and he was known to support the raise his voice against injustices.

The case is being probed by the police and one of the culprits, Abbas Sial, has already been captured.
