Pakistan shows its ire over execution of JI leader in Dhaka
Thursday, May 12th, 2016 11:08:43 by fatimaarshadJamaat-e-Islami (JI) leader, Motiur Rehman Nizami was recently hanged in Dhaka for his alleged crimes committed during the 1971 war. He was tried under the newly set up War Tribunal under the current government and his execution is being termed unjust by many in Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Pakistan reacted angrily over Nizami’s execution and the Foreign Office also released a statement to register its indignation over this issue. In addition to that, the parliament of Pakistan also voiced ‘serious concerns’ and hundreds of people offered funeral prayers for the deceased leader in different parts of Pakistan.
The statement released by the Foreign Office stated; “His [Nizami’s] only sin was upholding the constitution and laws of Pakistan.” It added that the “act of suppressing the opposition by killing their leaders through flawed trials is completely against the spirit of democracy.”
Meanwhile the National Assembly (NA) also passed a unanimous resolution condemning Nizami’s execution. Several members of the NA also asked the speaker to take action against this unjust execution.
In addition to that, funeral prayers in absentia were offered for Nizami in different cities including Karachi, Faisalabad, Lahore, Peshawar and Islamabad, in which thousands of people prayed for the departed soul.
Nizami was hanged at a Dhaka prison in the early hours of Wednesday morning after he refused to appeal for clemency against the death sentence which was handed down following his conviction for genocide and other war crimes which were committed in the 1971 war.
