Panama Leaks scandal: PM to address concerns in NA today
Monday, May 16th, 2016 12:00:07 by fatimaarshadPrime Minister Nawaz Sharif is all set to make his first appearance in the National Assembly (NA) today after the Panama Leaks scandal surfaced about his family’s offshore accounts.
There has been hue and cry in the parliament over the premier’s family’s offshore accounts, and the opposition parties have taken a very strong stance over the issue. They have posed seven tricky questions to Nawaz Sharif about his family’s wealth.
It is unlikely that Sharif will address all those questions, but it is being speculated that he might offer the opposition parties a chance to form a house committee to give out fresh Terms of Reference (TORs) for the Panama Leaks scandal.
The government initially formed TORs which have been rejected by all opposition parties for being too, one-sided. Meanwhile, the Chief Justice (CJ) of Pakistan, Anwar Zaheer Jamali has also rejected these TORs as being too vague. The PM is also likely to ask the opposition to seek guidance from the CJ’s letter to form the new TORs.
Nawaz Sharif returned on Sunday evening from his visit to Turkey to attend the Turkish Prime Minister’s daughter’s wedding. As soon as he got back, he went into a meeting with his cabinet to discuss what to do during the NA session on Monday.
Even after all the options, if the opposition fails to agree on new TORs, then it will be left on the discretion of the Supreme Court to frame new ones in order to start the investigation either through a judicial commission or a large bench of the apex court.
