MQM parts ways with joint opposition over Panama Leaks issue
Tuesday, May 17th, 2016 4:30:15 by fatimaarshadMuttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has decided not to form part of the joint opposition which is formed over the Panama Leaks issue, against the government. According to the latest reports, MQM cited ‘reservations over some matters’ as the reason for not attending the joint meeting called by opposition party leaders on Tuesday.
The meeting was called to formulate a joint strategy after the prime minister failed to convince the opposition parties about his family’s sources of income which justify the offshore companies.
The meeting was chaired by Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly, Syed Khursheed Shah, and the agenda was to devise a future strategy for the parties following the PM’s address.
Pakistan Muslim League – Quaid chief Pervez Elahi said that the opposition was united. “We will present 70 questions to the government and add to their worries.”
Initially, the opposition parties had posed seven questions to the PM related to his sources of wealth and other issues after the Panama Leaks scandal emerged. However, Nawaz Sharif did not directly address any of those questions during the NA session on Monday, therefore, the opposition members have decided to bombard him with more questions.
During the NA session on Monday, Nawaz Sharif presented his tax records before the House and even gave details about his family’s assets. He further added that evidence of his belongings and sources of income will be presented to the committee probing the Panama Leaks issue.
“We are not afraid of anything and present ourselves for accountability,” Nawaz told Parliament. “I request the House to join me in formulating a charter, like the one I had signed with former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto (late), to investigate Panama Papers,” he added.
