A recently published report in The New York Times claims that Pakistan also provided intelligence reports which helped in tracking Mullah Akhtar Mansour’s whereabouts. According to the report, the United States picked up a mix of phone intercepts and tips from sources in addition to the intelligence reports from Pakistan to locate Mansour.

The report also claims that US President Barack Obama gave the go-ahead weeks ago to target and kill Mullah Mansour. The order was given to US Military’s Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) to attack Mansour through a drone strike.

An unnamed source also told reporters that the government of Pakistan had been informed several weeks ago, that Mullah Mansour was a target. However, it was never shared that he would be targeted on Pakistani soil.

According to the same report, Mansour had gone to Iran for undisclosed medical treatment and he was targeted and killed when he was coming back to Pakistan from Iran in a rented vehicle in a remote area of Balochistan.

The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif and the Army Chief, General Raheel Sharif were informed of the attack after it had taken place. The Premier strongly condemned this and called the move an attack on Pakistan’s sovereignty.

The attack on Mullah Mansour is the most high-profile US incursion into Pakistan since the 2011 attack on Osama bin Laden’s compound in the city of Abbottabad.
