Shot transgender succumbs to wounds in Peshawar hospital
Wednesday, May 25th, 2016 12:15:36 by fatimaarshadTransgender Alisha who was rushed to the Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar after getting shot eight times, has passed away after being unable to sustain her injuries. According to reports, Alisha was shot by a disgruntled customer, who was also trying to extort money out of her.
Alisha’s case got highlighted as she was badly mistreated, further pointing towards the problem of bias against the transgender community. Her death marks the fifth case of reported violence against transgender people in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province.
Adnan, Sameer, Komal and Ayesha were also targeted this year for being transgender. All of these people were members of the Trans Action Alliance (TAA) KP-a group which includes people of civil society and trans people in the province.
When Alisha got shot, she was immediately rushed to the Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) on Wednesday, so that she could be given prompt attention. However, the management of the hospital was not very serious in treating her case, and she had to wait for two hours before being admitted at the hospital.
Both male and female ward attendants did not want Alisha in their wards, hence she had to be admitted to a private room. Alisha’s attendants, other transgender people like her, were shunned by people at the hospital and most of the people made fun of them.
“These people don’t laugh at us when they book us for their shows and family functions but they laugh at us when we like any human being are going through some trouble,” Alisha’s friend said.
Members of the TAA and Alisha’s relatives have decided to take her body to the Faqirabad police station to mark their protest.
