Thursday, May 26th, 2016 2:09:57 by fatimaarshadThe Foreign Office of Pakistan confirmed the death of Taliban leader, Mullah Mansour on Thursday in a US drone strike near the Pak-Afghan border. Mansour was killed on Saturday by the US forces, and his death has been reported to Pakistan only after it had taken place.
Initially, government representatives did not confirm the Taliban leaders death but not the confirmation has been released by the Foreign Office. The Prime Minister’s adviser on Foreign Affairs, Sartaj Aziz held a press conference on Thursday to update the situation on Mansour’s case.
While he confirmed Mansour’s death, Aziz did mention that his body is still being kept and that it has not been handed over to anyone.
“According to the Afghan Taliban, Mullah Mansour was traveling under a a fake identity,” said Sartaj Aziz. “It has been confirmed that it was Mullah Mansour who was killed in the drone strike. We are still waiting for DNA test results of the body, and the body will not be given to anyone until the DNA results are received.”
When Mansour’s death was reported to the Prime Minister and Army Chief after it had taken place, both firmly condemned the action since it infringed the sovereignty of Pakistan.
During the press conference Aziz also mentioned this fact and further added that Mansour’s death will be a setback for talks between the Taliban and Afghan government. He also said that Pakistan had protested about this attack to the US and that it is planning on raising this issue at the United Nations as well.
