Court Summons Police Officers In Connection to Staged Encounter Case
Wednesday, June 1st, 2016 9:00:51 by modousarrOn Monday, The Sindh High Court (SHC) sent for Hyderabad’s senior superintendent of police and the SITE SHO over the suspected false meeting of a Hindu doctor.
The summoning happened a day after The Express Tribune publicised the 14-month ordeal of the “half-fried” victim. The victim named Dr Deepak Raj is a psychiatrist from Korangi and is currently hospitalised in police custody since April 2015 when he was shot more than 15 times after police officers mistook his identity for an iniquitous criminal named Sharif Panhwar.
The two officials are scheduled to appear before the court on the 1st of June. The Sindh chief secretary, the home and health secretaries, police chief and the Hyderabad DIG have also been summoned before the court on the aforementioned date for comments on the case.
The victim had visited his relatives near Fateh Chowk in the SITE area of Hyderabad on April 10 and was not seen ever since. His wife, Suneeta went to the court seeking compensation from the local official for the indispositions suffered by her husband after his left leg had to be surgically removed after it was crushed by 12 bullets.
The doctor remains in police custody under the name Sharif Panhwar even though his true identity has been verified.
Suneeta’s counsel Advocate Amanullah Sheikh disclosed that his client found out about her husband’s arrest a day later through a Sindhi-language newspaper.
The counsel held that Deepak was then taken to the SITE police station where he was ruthlessly tortured after he refused to give a fake confessional statement.
Amanullah asserted that Hyderabad SSP Irfan Baloch had acknowledged that Deepak’s case was of a misidentification but maintained that the shootout happened.
It was later revealed that the police had purposefully delayed the doctor’s transfer to the hospital, hoping he would die after they realised their mistake.
