Dozens feared dead as violent storms hit Twin Cities
Thursday, June 2nd, 2016 4:08:51 by fatimaarshadViolent thunderstorm and rain hit the Twin Cities on Wednesday, causing widespread destruction and deaths on Wednesday. According to reports, at least 30 people have been killed due to the harsh weather, while hundreds of others have been injured.
Property and cars were also damaged and electric supply to different areas of Rawalpindi and Islamabad still remains suspended. The storm also hit other parts of upper Pakistan including the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
According to the reports provided by police, 11 people died in the capital city of Islamabad while 69 others were injured. Meanwhile, in Rawalpindi, 19 people were killed due to the rain and 122 others were injured.
A mother and two of her daughters were killed in F-7 when the roof of their house collapsed. Two people were also killed in Bhara Kahu due to rain-related incidents.
Fire broke out at a vegetable market in Islamabad, when electric wires fell and sparked fire. However, the fire brigade was quick to respond and situation was curtailed. Electricity poles were also seen fallen on the road near the Benazir International Airport in Islamabad. Flights were suspended due to the harsh weather and they resumed only after the strong winds stopped.
Glass windows of metro stations, walls of different buildings, street lights and billboards were also badly damaged due to the storm-an overall assessment of the damage is still underway.
The Inspector General (IG) Islamabad Police said police have been alerted in the wake of heavy rains and thunderstorm.
