Lost boy Abdullah refuses to recognize father

Abdullah, the three-year-old boy who was dropped at the Edhi Center a few weeks back, failed to recognize the man who claims to be his father.

A man by the name of Muhammad Iqbal, who belongs to Khanewal, is allegedly Abdullah’s father, as he claims to have married his mother Haleema, ten years back. Iqbal came to the Edhi center, after hearing about Abdullah, but when he came in front of the boy, he started to howl and scream.

Abdullah had to be pacified by an Edhi center staffer and he only became quite when Iqbal was made to leave. It seems that either Abdullah was tortured by Iqbal or he completely fails to recognize him. Since the boy cannot talk clearly, the exact reason for his behavior is likely to remain a mystery.

According to a police statement recorded by Iqbal, he said that he married Haleema but later divorced her because she had a ‘suspicious nature’. Iqbal said that he did not send her the divorce papers, but just divorced her verbally. He said that he did not know what became of Haleema and Abdullah after he divorced her.

Iqbal further told the police that he had two children with Haleema-the first born was a girl who died when she was one-year-old and the second child was Abdullah. Iqbal had been living in Khanewal after divorcing Haleema, with his first wife and children.

Meanwhile, Abdullah’s maternal grandmother has also come forward to claim the child, but the Edhi management has refused to hand him over to anyone till the time the court gives the directives.
