Obama hosts an unlikely friend, Indian Prime Minister
Wednesday, June 8th, 2016 7:01:00 by modousarrThe Prime Minister of India was welcomed by the President of the United States of America this week with the sole aim of maintaining good relations between the two countries.
What is unknown is whether a good relationship will be achieved between the two unlikely of friends. The PM’s involvement in an anti-Muslim riot was one of the main reasons why he was no allowed into the state house when the current US president came to power.
However visits were made by the PM on a number of occasions after the ban was lifted when he came into office in May 2014.
The US president had also been to India on several occasions. The relations between the US and India is not necessarily one other countries may envy although India is making efforts to be on the good side of the US.
It will be a wise judgment for the US to also be in good terms with India because they stand the chance to benefit a lot from its large and productive market.
Yesterdays meeting was a much awaited one for the Indian PM which set the ground for enforcing a tighter bond between the two nations. An increase in the US- India trade from $120 billion to $500 billion is an appealing figure for both leaders.
In preparation for his trip the PM Modi made a statement that his invitation for the US president Obama was to foster close relations. He went on to say the US president called upon him as one of the leaders “he had a close and productive relation with.”
The PM will get the opportunity to speak in a meeting of the US Congress where he will become the fifth Indian head of state to do so. A light gathering will be held later where diplomats and decision makers will be present.
“In-depth and improved negotiations are to be had,” India’s ambassador to the US said in his statement quickly adding that the economic status is still open for discussion.
With India’s increasing population, the need for electricity is high on the agenda. However, the deal made by the US to help India in power production comes to a stand still due to the fact that questions have arisen about the safety of the site in the state of Gujarat where the PM comes from.
With the sole aim of fostering close ties between the two leaders, several other avenues have been explored to boost relations. The military and the security are just few of the areas that both leaders can work on to improve greater ties.
