Husband of murdered Lahore teen vows to avenge her death

The husband of 16-year-old Zeenat Bibi, who was burned to death by her own family for marrying of her own choice, has vowed to avenge his wife’s death. On Thursday, Zeenat’s husband, Hasan Khan talked to media and said that he will do whatever it took to get justice for his young wife.

According to the details of the case, Zeenat Bibi had eloped with 20-year-old motorcycly mechanic Hasan Khan, after her family refused to let her marry him. The young couple got married and were living happily when Zeenat’s family reached out to her and asked her to come back so that they could send her off with Hasan with their consent.

Zeenat fell into their trap and as soon as she got home, her mother, Perveen Bibi strangled her and set her on fire. Zeenat burned to death right on spot and other than her feet, her entire body got burnt to coal. It is being speculated that Perveen Bibi’s son and brother also aided her with the killing, but so far she is trying to protect them.

Zeenat’s body was not even claimed by her family and her charred remains were buried by her husband’s family before dawn.

Speaking to media persons on Thursday, a visibly distraught Khan said: “I am determined to continue the legal proceedings against the family. I am after them, and my family is supporting me.

“It is my destiny now to bring her justice – if the accused are condemned it will bring calm and peace to my soul.”

Killing for the sake of honor is not a new phenomenon in Pakistan. Every year, hundreds of girls are killed for this bringing dishonor to their families.
