Female Analyst ‘Verbally Abused’ By JUI-F Senator During Talk Show
Monday, June 13th, 2016 7:21:14 by modousarrMarvi Sirmed, a female analyst and rights activist, during a television show on Friday, was verbally abused by a senator of the Jamiat-i-Ulema-i-Islam Fazl (JUI-F), leading to a social media uproar.
NewsOne, a private television channel aired the show which held a debate on the recent honor killings in Pakistan. The JUI-F Senator Hafiz Hamdullah got irritated over Ms. Sirmed’s comment which he believed was in support of the comments made by Barrister Masroor, a panelist in the program. The comments had to do with the failure of the Council of Islamic Ideology to respond to the killings.
Hamdullah had a strong opinion that Barrister Masroor’s use of the words ‘pee k soey hue hain’ (sleeping after getting intoxicated) to describe the CII chairman and his fellow JUI-F member Maulana Sherani was unwarranted.
Hammdullah lashing at Sirmed said, “I won’t allow you to speak if you are supporting his words.”
The squabble between Hamdullah and Sirmed led to an exchange of searing words between both the rights activist and the lawmaker.
He maintained the position that he would not allow Sirmed to speak.
The insulting language was removed from the transmission. Nonetheless, on her Facebook wall, Sirmed accused Hamdullah of verbally abusing her with the most terrible language and also attempted to physically assaulting her.
In a statement, Sirmed claimed that Hamdullah tried to physically attack her, causing a panelist, Fayaz ul Hassan Chauhan to block him and have security called immediately.
According to her, the whole charade was recorded by the channel’s cameras.
Fayaz ul Hassan Chauhan of the PTI and Barrister Masroor confirmed Sirmed’s claim on social media.
Lawmakers, media representatives, and politicians took on Twitter to denounce the attack on Sirmed, with some demanding the revocation of Maulana Hamdullah’s Senate membership.
This is not the first time that such has happened. The JUI-F senator in the past used offensive language against a female anchor during a television talk show.
He justified his offensive language as a result of what he considered a falsification of clergy’s views on violence against women.
