Pak-Afghan border closed-off in Torkham after clashes along the border

Skirmishes along the Pak-Afghan border around the Landikotal and Torkham area, has resulted in a curfew being imposed there and closing-off of the border.

According to the details provided by the media wing of Pakistan Army, ISPR, fire and bombardment by Afghan forces on Monday resulted in the injury of three Pakistani security personnel. It was also stated that the attack by Afghan forces was completely unprovoked, but Pakistani forces did retaliate.

“At about 2120 hrs tonight Afghan Security forces resorted to unprovoked firing on Pakistani side at Torkham Gate. A Pakistani soldier was injured due to Afghan firing,” a statement by the ISPR read.

Due to the Afghan attack, a Frontier Corps officer and two Khasadar forces men were injured. An Afghan check post caught fire when Pakistan initiated a retaliatory attack.

The mortar bombs fired by the Afghan forces landed in a public locality which injured six people including two children. The injured were rushed to the Landikotal hospital.

It was also reported that the scuffle began after Pakistan placed a gate at Torkham border, in a move to curb the flow of illegal movement along the border. According to the ISPR, several militants have been found crossing the Torkham border in the past few days.

After the skirmish, a curfew has been placed in the area for an indefinite period of time. The Torkham market was also evacuated and trade between Pakistan and Afghanistan through the Transit trade route has been suspended and vehicles carrying the goods have been sent back to Peshawar.
