Police delay the registry of FIR against senator
Monday, June 13th, 2016 3:39:26 by fatimaarshadThe past few days saw a social media storm over ill-treatment of a civil rights activist by Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F) Sentaor Hafiz Hamdullah. A video footage showing abuses hurled by the senator towards the activist, Marvi Sirmed, is making rounds over the internet.
According to the latest reports, Sirmed has tried multiple times to get a First Investigation Report (FIR) registered against the senator, but so far the police have not registered a case against him. Police officials attributed the delay in registration of the FIR to their failure to obtain a video footage of the TV show in which the incident took place. They claimed that according to the standard operating procedure, the Senate chairman has been informed of the incident and he has also been told that an FIR will be registered against him.
Despite this claim by the police, Sirmed alleges that the police are not cooperating with her and that she has decided to take up the matter and approach a court to seek registration of the FIR. In addition to that, she has even contacted Senate Chairman Mian Raza Rabbani with a request to initiate an inquiry into the matter.
Sirmed also alleges that Hamdullah also tried to attack her during the show and that she has asked for the CCTV footage of that incident from the channel which produced the show. She added that she submitted an application to the Kohsar police station in Islamabad on Saturday, but the police did not cooperate with her.
A lawyer for the Supreme Court commented on the case and said that the Station House Officer (SHO) is bound to register an FIR as soon as he received it. In case of refusal, Sirmed has the option of to submit an application to senior police officers and file a petition in the court of Justice of Peace.
