Police arrest brother of girl burnt over love marriage in Lahore

Another arrest has been made in the case of the girl who was burnt to death by her own family for marrying out of her choice. The second arrest made is that of the girl’s brother, identified as Anees.

Anees was arrested by authorities from a house in Lahore’s Nishtar Colony area. During interrogation, he admitted to killing his own sister by first strangling her and later burning her to death. His account corroborated with the findings of the post-mortem report. He told the police officers that his mother, Parveen Bibi, was involved in this heinous act and that at the time of the incident, his sister-in-law was also present in the house.

After killing his sister, Anees fled the house whereas her mother came out on the streets and started crying and shouting that she had killed her own daughter for dishonoring the family. According to police reports, Parveen Bibi still shows no remorse over the killing.

The 17-year-old victim, identified as Zeenat, was burnt to death by her mother and brother, after she eloped with her boyfriend and later married him. The girl’s family called her back on the pretext that they wanted to celebrate her marriage and send her off properly. Zeenat feel into their trap and agreed to come back home. As soon as she came back, she was attacked and killed by her mother and brother.

This incident has sparked outrage from people from all walks of life and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has taken notice of the incident and called for an inquiry.
