Tension escalates between Pakistan and Afghanistan as Torkham border situation worsens
Wednesday, June 15th, 2016 1:28:28 by fatimaarshadThe Afghan forces continued firing on Tuesday at the Torkham border, where due to earlier firing incident, a Pakistani soldier died and several others were injured. According to reports, the Afghan forces again opened unprovoked firing towards the Pakistani side on Tuesday due to which, two other officers were seriously injured.
Details showed that the Afghan National Army and border police targeted the Pakistani border checkpoints and administration offices with heavy guns and fired mortars at 9:00 PM. This caused damage to the buildings and vehicles parked in the area, and created unrest in the area.
Some of the mortars hit Pakistani security pickets, as a result of which two security personnel from the Frontier Corps sustained injuries. The injured were immediately rushed to a hospital in Landikotal.
Some of the mortars fired also landed in the border village of Bacha Maina, which had thankfully been evacuated earlier. Afghan forces also targeted Pakistan’s customs offices, which had been evacuated just three days before. Due to these evacuations, no casualties were reported due to the firing.
Apparently, the firing erupted when the construction of a gate was started at the Pakistan side of the border. The gate is being constructed so that the documents of all the border-crossers can be properly checked.
Due to these firing incidents, tension between Kabul and Islamabad are at a high level. Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan also held a press conference in which he said that it seems likely that Afghanistan is playing into some other country’s hands.
