According to the reports of the incident, the attack was targeted at a bus carrying Nepalese security contractors, who were going for their duty on Monday morning. Other than the Nepalese nationals, Afghan officials were also killed.
According to an eye witness’s account, several dead bodies and at least two wounded people were carried out of the yellow bus which was attacked. Apparently the suicide bomber was also killed, but it is still unclear whether his body remained intact.
Police and emergency service vehicles immediately surrounded the area of the blast in the Banae district of Kabul and all traffic was diverted to other locations. Police officials are currently working on identifying the victims so that their families can be informed.
According to reports, the suicide bomber waited near the compound where the security contractors were staying. Once he sighted their minibus moving through the morning traffic, he rammed into it. Due to the explosion, damage was caused to the adjacent vehicles and people in the nearby markets were also injured.
Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi confirmed the blast and Tweeted that 14 people had been killed while eight others were injured.
The Afghan Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack through a statement from the group’s main spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid. The group claims that the attack is a revenge for the execution of six Taliban prisoners.
