Pakistan, Afghanistan agree to resolve border situation amicably
Tuesday, June 21st, 2016 2:04:01 by fatimaarshadThe recent increase in tension between Pakistan and Afghanistan at the Torkham border prompted high-ranking officials of both the countries to meet and discuss the situation. On Monday, a team of Afghanistan officials led by deputy foreign minister Hekmat Khalil Karzai flew in to Pakistan for talks with their counterparts here.
According to the latest reports, it was agreed between both these parties to find a ‘practical’ solution as both sides expressed commitment to resolve all border management issues bilaterally.
A statement from the Afghan foreign ministry said the talks were held in an “amicable and friendly atmosphere” but said Karzai had raised what it called “various violations” by Pakistan, including setting up checkpoints in Afghan territory.
“Moreover, he strongly protested against Pakistan’s ongoing unprovoked artillery shelling of Afghan villages,” it said.
The current tense border situation arose out of an issue which relates to the construction of a gate at the Torkham border at Pakistan’s side of the border. Afgahn forces showed their resentment by opening fire, triggering diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
Firing between both the sides ensued for three days and during this time, the nearby villages on both sides of the border, were evacuated. A Major of the Pakistan Army was martyred during the clashes where several others were injured.
At last, a ceasefire was enacted on Thursday and now after the talks, it is being hoped that the tense situation will be diffused soon.
