A shop owner was arrested by the Tando Adam police for selling sandals with the symbol of Om, a sacred Hindu symbol.

On Sunday evening, Jehanzeb Khaskheli was arrested at his shop in Shahi Bazaar, Tando Adam. An FIR was lodged against him under Section 295-A of the Pakistan Penal Code which mentions intentional and malicious acts done for the purpose of inciting religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious concepts.

Khaskeli was held in police custody by the Tando Adam court of civil judge and judicial magistrate.

He confessed to the police that he had bought the stock from various traders in Lahore and did not recall the trader that had supplied him the sandals with the Om symbol on them.

SHO Agha Shamshad of the Tando Adam police relayed that about three days ago, the shop owner’s shop was visited by a Hindu woman who had taken notice of the sandals that were being sold.

Although she voiced her annoyance over it, the shop owner failed to offer any explanation.

He added that about three to four sandals had the symbol printed on them.

The event went viral on social media, leading to denouncement from different people and rights groups.
