Threatening phone call from Taliban being probed in Barrister Owais abduction case
Wednesday, June 22nd, 2016 10:12:27 by fatimaarshadA threatening phone call from Afghanistan is being probed in Barrister Owais Ali Shah’s kidnapping case. The phone call, made a few days before the kidnapping, is said to have been made from Afghan Taliban and the caller forewarned of dire consequences if death penalties handed to convicts in Safoora massacre were not overturned.
The identity of the caller and the receiver were not told but it was reported by news agencies that the call was made from an Afghan mobile number to Karachi. Initially, the call was not taken seriously but now it is being taken into serious consideration after Owais’s kidnapping.
Justice Sajjad Ali Shah’s son, Owais Ali Shah was kidnapped in broad daylight on Monday, from outside an upscale superstore in Karachi’s Clifton area. Owais came out of the store and was about to sit in his car when four unidentified men in white shalwar kameez, forced Owais to go with them. According to eye witnesses’ reports, Owais initially tried to resist those men but they were ultimately able to overpower and take him with them.
Law enforcement authorities were immediately directed by the Sindh Chief Minister to make all efforts to retrieve Owais but till now, there has been no trace of him. Initially, it was being thought that Owais has been kidnapped for ransom but according to DIG CIA Sultan Khawaja, his case is similar to that of Shahbaz Taseer and Ali Haider Gilani. Both Taseer and Gilani had been kidnapped by the Taliban for their agendas.
Meanwhile at least 25 suspects have been arrested in raids carried out in different parts of Karachi and the police are also probing eye witnesses for possible leads into Owais’s kidnapping case.
