‘Star Trek’ actor’s death prompts Chrysler to renew its recalls for vehicle fix
Thursday, June 23rd, 2016 2:53:07 by fatimaarshadActor Anthon Yelchin’s death last week in a freak vehicle accident is prompting renewed calls for a vehicle flaw fix in the recalled 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Safety advocates are calling to the manufacturer to increase their efforts to fix the flaws which are currently in the Jeep, so that such accidents can be avoided in the future.
Yelchin was killed last week outside his own house when his SUV rolled backward in the steep driveway of his Log Angeles home and pinned him against a brick wall and fence. He was discovered after many hours only after his friends realized that he did not show up for a planned rehearsal.
Consumer safety advocates say that the incident showcases an urgent need to improve how recalls are handled, with a record number of unrepaired US vehicles still on the road as drivers wait for fixes that can take many months to implement.
Talking to reporters, a safety advocate said that this incident is prompting many people to think that if this could happen to Yelchin, it could happen to any of them.
Yelchin’s 2015 Cherokee was one of 1.1 million vehicles which were recalled by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles in April over an issue which makes the jeep roll away. Even though it is not known yet whether Yelchin’s accident was caused by the same fault, there have been many accidents reported due to it.
“If there’s any silver lining in this it will prompt more attention to recalls,” said a security advocate. “There was no sense of urgency on Chrysler’s part” to get the fix in place.
