David Cameron announces resignation following Britain’s exit from EU
Friday, June 24th, 2016 3:14:57 by fatimaarshadUnited Kingdom’s Prime Minister, David Cameron has said that he will resign as the prime minister of the country after majority of the Britons voted to break free from European Union (EU).
In the historical referendum where UK nationals were asked whether they wanted to stay with the EU or part ways, 51.9 percent voted in favor of the later. Before the referendum, Cameron had hinted at remaining the prime minister whatever the result might be. However, that changed once the referendum result was out.
Prime Minister David Cameron held an emotional speech outside 10 Downing Street, in which he announced his decision of resigning.
“I do not think it would be right for me to be the captain that steers our country to its next destination,” he told reporters outside his office.
Cameron was visibly emotional, as he choked back tears as he further elaborated his decision to resigning.
“This is not a decision I’ve taken lightly but I do believe it is in the national interest to have a period of stability and then the new leadership required,” he said.
“I think it’s right that this new Prime Minister takes the decision about when to trigger article 50 and start the process of leaving the EU.”
Cameron himself belonged from the opposite camp and wanted Britain to remain a part of EU.
Following the historical ‘Brexit’ decision, Britain’s stock market fell and the value of the pound and Euro also plummeted.
