Gunman takes hostages at German cinema before being killed by police
Friday, June 24th, 2016 12:44:24 by fatimaarshadA masked gunman stormed into a cinema in a quite German town of Viernheim on Thursday afternoon and created panic in the area. The gunman, whose identity is still not known, took hostages before being killed by the police.
According to the details provided by eye witnesses, the gunman entered the cinema wielding a rifle and wearing ammunition. He appeared to be confused and according to some reports, he held several people hostage around him at which time the police decided to take him down. He was killed on the spot and no one else was hurt in the process.
“There were hostages in the vicinity of the individual. It was at this point that he was fatally shot by special forces,” Hesse Interior Minister Peter Beuth said. “I have no knowledge that anyone else was harmed.”
Initially the German public TV said that 25 people were injured but it wasn’t clear whether they were shot or that they were hurt in other ways. Police are also investigating whether these people were hurt because of the tear gas which was used to tackle the gunman.
When the attacker was still inside, there was a lot of confusion as per the identity and motive of the shooter. A lot of TV shows were claiming that this was a terror attack, but it was later found out that the incident had no link to terrorism.
Germany has given shelter to more than a million refugees in the past year, and there are concerns that ISIS related cells have been created in the country, making it prone to terror attacks.
