The Functional Committee on Human Rights is set to delve into the issue of rising ‘honor killings’ specially the incidents of burning women alive this week.

The Senate Chairman, Mian Raza Rabbani brought the matter before the committee on June 9th.

The committee led by Senator Nasreen Jalil of the Muttahida Quami Movement will converse on the increasing trend of such saddening occurrences and propose strategies for putting a stop to the menace of the supposed ‘honor’ killings by making mention of certain relevant provisions in the chapter ‘Offences against Women’ in the Pakistan Penal Code.

The Torture Convention adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nation on December 10, 1987, will be put before the committee and the report of the European Union on Human Rights will also be referred to.

While holding its pre-budget session, the Senate adjourned its proceedings for five minutes to brief the public on the incidents of serious violence against girls and women. There was strong emotion in the House, requesting that the government resurrect important legislations for the protection of girls and women against ‘honor’ killings.

Based on hints by the federal Minister of Human Rights, Kamran Michael, the government seems to be intending on drafting its own Anti-Honor Killing Bill.

A similar bill in the past proposed by former Senator Sughra Imam of the Pakistan Peoples Party elapsed.
