PEMRA bans Amir Liaquat’s show, asks host to apologize on television
Tuesday, June 28th, 2016 1:11:20 by fatimaarshadThe Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has banned televangelist and talk show host Aamir Liaquat from hosting his Ramzan show on Geo Entertainment for three days. The ban was enacted on ‘Inam Ghar’ for airing inappropriate content.
PEMRA had issued a show cause notice to the show even after the June 6 episode in which Liaquat reenacted a girl committing suicide. That particular episode also had a guest who used abusive language on air and the host did not stop him from doing so. The show cause notice was served to the channel on June 14.
Now this is the second time that the regulatory authority took notice and issued another warning in the form of a three-day ban. During the June 25 transmission of the show, a female caller used inappropriate words during the call. In other incidents, Liaquat was seen hugging a pole provocatively while singing a song.
PEMRA revealed that till date, it has received hundreds of calls from viewers, after which it decided to take action against the show. Representatives from Geo Entertainment, have asked for 15 days to submit a detailed reply regarding the different complaints received during the show’s transmission.
The Council of Complaints recommended to PEMRA to ban the show from June 28 till June 30 as a first step and then ask Liaquat to apologize to the public for airing non-professional content which hurt the feelings of the viewers.
“In case of contempt of the order or no apology, the show will suspended indefinitely,” stated PEMRA in the statement.
“On the recommendations of the council, the relevant authority under Section 27 has advised Geo to suspend the transmission, and to ensure Amir Liaquat apologises in the beginning of July 1 transmission,” added the statement.
