Customs Inspector Murder Case Leads To Non-Bailable Arrest Warrants Issued For Ayaan

Model Ayaan Ali has issued a non-bailable arrest in the murder case of Customs Inspector Ejaz Mehmood.

The police were granted the warrant to arrest the accused with immediate effect. Others have also been subjected to warrants of arrest, including Customs Superintendent Zargham and Dr. Haroon.  They have been mandated by Magistrate Gulfam Latif Butt to present themselves before the court within 10 days.

The three warrants were issued by the court after the police included Custom Superintendent Zargham and Dr. Haroonn in the case following and Ayaan and Mehmood’s widow, Saima, personally recording their statements with the police.

The statements were recorded following Mehmood’s widow’s complaints in an application to the magistrate, stating that a year had elapsed since her husband’s murder, yet the police had failed to record her statement and that of her brothers-in-law.

Ayaan was also ordered to record a statement with the police but instead sent a written statement which was rejected.

Saima, in her statement to the police, said that her husband was a witness in the currency smuggling case against Ayaan Ali and an investigator too. She claimed that Mehmood was killed because of his refusal to bend under pressure and alter the course of the case in favor of Ayaan.

She also alleged that Customs Superintendent Zargham is an accomplice to the murder, including Dr. Haroon, who she said tampered with Mehmood’s post-mortem report.

Mehmood was shot dead at his home by unknown assailants in June 2015. Saima, his widow, in a petition claimed that he was killed at the request of the model because he had been the custodian of the case property and was under continuous threats and pressure to change and tamper with the evidence in favor of Ayaan. However, he had refused to comply.

Ayaan’s name was returned to the Exit Control List (ECL), although it had been earlier removed on Supreme Court orders, due to the request of Customs authorities and a petition by Mehmood’s widow.

The petition had Saima requesting that Ayaan’s name be kept in the ECL until her husband’s murder case is decided.

Last year, the customs court had indicted the model for attempting to smuggle more than half a million dollars in cash out of the country, which she pleaded not guilty.

She was arrested on March 14, 2015, for money laundering after she was caught with $506,000 in her luggage at Islamabad’s Benazir Bhutto International Airport before boarding a flight to Dubai.

In July last year, she was granted bail after having spent four months in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail and following the extension of her prison time.

The case turned political when the airport entry pass of the personal assistant to a former president was cancelled for allegedly trying to forward Ayaan’s suspected attempt to smuggle money.
