Qandeel Baloch’s Facebook and Instagram accounts deleted
Monday, July 25th, 2016 3:44:20 by fatimaarshadSocial media celebrity Qandeel Baloch’s accounts, which were her claim to fame, have been deleted by Facebook after her death. Baloch was murdered by her brother in Multan, in the name of honor, and since then there has been a lot of debate going on regarding honor killing in Pakistan and the rights of women in particular.
Qandeel Baloch’s official Facebook page, which hosted her pictures and videos, has been deleted permanently by the management whereas her Instagram account is also nowhere to be found. Now Instagram is also owned by Facebook so the same policies apply to that site as well.
According to Facebook policy, any personal account that belongs to a deceased individual will be automatically made into a memorialized account where friends and families can share memories on the timeline.
However, “pages with a sole admin whose account was memorialized will be removed from Facebook if we receive a valid request,” states Facebook’s help centre.
Since Qandeel Baloch was the sole admin of her page and many people might have reported it since she died, Facebook could have permanently deleted it. Another possible explanation for the deletion of the account can be that the Government of Pakistan might have requested Facebook to do so. Even in the past, Facebook has conceded to requests of the state to remove or block content which violates any sort of regulation.
The 26-year-old social media celebrity was strangled to death by her own brother at her Multan residence. Investigations into the case are still going on but till now, her brother has been taken into custody and chances are that the other names will be added to the suspects’ list.
