The attacker was identified as Satoshi Uematsu who had worked at the care center located in Sagamihara, which is a city located in the west of Tokyo. According to police reports, Uematsu had been fired from the facility and he apparently held a grudge against the management.
When the 26-year-old attacker turned himself in, he confessed to the officers saying ‘I did it’ and that ‘the disabled should all disappear’.
“When Uematsu turned himself in, he was found carrying kitchen knives and other types of knives stained with blood,” a police official told reporters.
According to the details of the incident provided, the attack started around 2 AM on Tuesday morning when Uematsu broke the window of the facility and entered it carrying weapons. He first tied up all the care givers at the facility and then attacked the residents with a knife.
A doctor who treated the victims and evaluated the dead bodies told reporters that there were ‘deep stab’ wounds to the necks of the victims.
“The patients are very shocked mentally, and they cannot speak now,” the doctor told national broadcaster NHK.
The police was alerted about the incident at around 2:30 AM and immediately a fleet of police cars were deployed at the facility. After a while, ambulances and fire trucks also arrived at the venue and the entire area was cordoned off.
