Construction of gate completed at Torkham border, Afghanistan reacts strongly against the move

The construction of the Bab-e-Pakistan gate has been completed at Torkham border, aimed at keeping a check on cross-border movement between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The gate has two doors-one will be used for entry into Pakistan while the other will be used for exit. Security checkpoints have been constructed at both ends of the gates so that any unneeded movement can be halted on time. The gate is aimed at preventing unchecked movement of people across the border and curb activities such as terrorism and smuggling.

Even though the gate has been constructed well into Pakistani territory and will prove to be beneficial for peace to both countries, Afghanistan is not liking the decision. Ever since the construction of the gate started on June 12, Afghanistan has reacted to it by opening unprovoked fire towards the Pakistani side.

Soon after the construction of the gate began, Afghan soldiers opened fire at their Pakistani counterparts resulting in loss of lives and damage to property. The exchange of fire between the two countries went on for a few days until a truce was called.

High level meetings between officials of both Afghanistan and Pakistan took place in Islamabad and Kabul, after which things got a little under control.

After the construction of the Bab-e-Pakistan was completed on Monday, Afghanistan officials reacted strongly to the decision citing the decision as inappropriate and saying that it violated the previous agreements.

The inauguration of the gate is expected to take place on August 8, and so far it is on schedule.
