Members of the TransAction Alliance and representatives of the civil society, fighting for Alisha’s case, have rejected the inquiry report on her death. Alisha was a transgender who died at Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) in Peshawar, allegedly due to maltreatment of the doctors and staff at the hospital about two months back.

A news conference was held at Peshawar Press Club on Monday, in which the president of TransAction Alliance, Farzana Jan, alleged that the people who were actually responsible for Alisha’s death have been protected in the report whereas unsuspecting doctors have been fired.

She further said that the committee which was constituted by the government to probe the matter into Alisha’s death, only consisted of the hospital staff and government officials. Jan said that no one from the transgender community or from the family of the deceased, were included in the committee. Jan further said that even the Terms of Reference were made without their knowledge and hence the findings of the inquiry did not reflect a true picture of what actually happened.

“The terms of reference of the committee were not relevant to our desire and we were never consulted on the TORs. The current report only reflects administrative flaws by the hospital but it doesn’t say anything about the behaviour of the hospital staff, which is our primary concern,” she added.

Jan further added, that the only doctor who helped Alisha, Dr. Liaquat, was fired without any reason. “Dr Liaquat, who supported us and treated us well, has been fired without any reason while no action has been taken against the people against whom legal action was recommended,” she added.

Members of the civil society also agreed with Jan’s comments and demanded a medical and administrative audit of LRH, so that everyone can be treated impartially and such incidents can be avoided in the future.
