A National Assembly’s (NA) committee formed specifically to find out how confessional videos of under-trial prisoners from jail regularly surface, has directed the Sindh police to investigate the matter further.

NA’s Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting held a meeting of the sub-committee which was presided over by Imran Zafar Laghari. In that meeting on Tuesday, it was decided that not only were such confessional videos unethical in a civilized society, there were actually also against the law.

The Additional Inspector General (AIG) of Sindh, Sanaullah Abbasi was directed by the committee to probe the matter further and keep former minister of petroleum, Dr. Asim Hussain’s confessional video as a leading case in point. Dr. Asim faces charges of terror financing and grafting and his case is still in progress.

The directive given to the Sindh AIG is to find out what the motive behind these leaked videos is and who has leaked them. The AIG has been given a timeline of three weeks to investigate the matter and submit a report to the committee.

Mohammad Talal Chaudhary, a member of the NA criticized the Sindh government for not registering a formal complaint with the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) earlier against the news channels which had broadcasted the confessional video. Such videos influence the decision of the court as every news analyst presents his or her own views on the subject matter.

With Dr. Asim’s case as the leading one, the committee has asked to fix responsibilities and find the culprits so that such cases can be avoided in the future.
