Indian Home Minister apprises parliament of tense Saarc meeting
Friday, August 5th, 2016 2:46:51 by fatimaarshadThe Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh, returned home after leaving the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) Interior Minister’s meeting mid-way following a bitter exchange of words with Pakistani Interior Minister, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan.
While attending the parliament session on Friday, Rajnath apprised his fellow members of the meeting which took place in Pakistan during the Saarc summit.
“All of our prime ministers have done their best to improve relations with our neighbors, but this neighbor never learns,” he said referring to Pakistan amid a smattering of laughter in the house.
When asked how he responded to Nisar’s comments about Indian violation of human rights in Kashmir, Rajnath told the members of the parliament that “Pakistan is the biggest violator of human rights”, as reported by NDTV.
Rajnath also explained that he had skipped a luncheon meeting as he ‘had not gone there to have lunch’. According to some sources, Rajnath first asked whether Nisar would be attending the luncheon. When he was told that the Interior Minister had to attend another meeting and hence will be skipping the luncheon, Rajnath also left after that.
“It is true that Chaudhry Nisar invited everyone for lunch. But then he left in his car. I also left. I have no complaints or grudges as I had not gone there to have lunch,” he said.
During the Saarc meeting, a tense war of words ensued between Rajnath and Nisar after the Indian Home Minister indirectly implied that Pakistan sponsors terrorism. After his comment, Nisar reminded Rajnath of the atrocities committed by Indian Army on Kashmiris and called that as terrorism. After these comments, Rajnath just left and even skipped the last session of the Saarc conference.
