Indian cricketer Ranvindra Jadeja in hot waters after clicking selfie with endangered lions
Wednesday, August 10th, 2016 3:31:38 by fatimaarshadIndian cricketer Ravindra Jadeja has been fined an amount of $300 for taking selfies with endangered Asiatic lions back in June.
A ban had been imposed on taking pictures with the Asiatic lions which can be found in the country’s western city of Gir. The officials had advised all the people visiting the wildlife park to abstain from taking pictures with the lions, but Jadeja did not pay much heed to these instructions and went ahead with taking pictures.
Jadeja posted pictures of himself and his wife on Instagram, posing in front of a pride of lions in June, after which an official inquiry was launched by the officials.
“We had instituted a probe and called Jadeja for a statement,” A.P. Singh, chief forest conservator in Gujarat state, told AFP.
“But since he was not available, his father-in-law Hardevsinh Solanki gave a written statement on his behalf and paid the fine of 20,000 rupees ($300),” he said.
In one of the pictures, Jadeja is seen smiling and pointing at a pride of lions resting behind him. He captioned that photo as; “family photo, having good time in Sasan (Gir)”. The other picture shows Jadeja and his wife posing as a lion looks on in the background.
The 27-year-old all-rounder is currently on tour with the Indian team in the West Indies, therefore he could not personally come for the case’s settlement.
A ban on pictures with the lions in the wildlife park of Gir, was imposed by the Gujarat forestry department after the wild cats unleashed a spate of attack in which villagers were killed or injured by the lions.
Asiatic lions are slightly smaller than African lions and they have a fold of skin along their bellies. They are found to be increasing in numbers in Gir with 523 recorded in the latest census.
