Dr. Amir Liaquat released from Rangers’ custody, says meeting was ‘friendly’
Tuesday, August 23rd, 2016 5:36:09 by fatimaarshadDr. Amir Liaquat, a famous television personality and a member of the Mutahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has been released from the paramilitary force’s custody. Dr. Liaquat had been detained for a night for questioning related to the recent incidents of violence in the city incited by the party chief’s recent anti-Pakistan speech.
After being released on Tuesday, Dr. Liaquat said that his meeting with Director General (DG) Rangers, Major General Bilal Akbar, had been friendly and that he had been served ‘tea and biscuits’ during the meeting.
Despite being asked, Dr. Liaquat refrained from elaborating what questions he had been asked during the ‘friendly meeting’. Rangers had detained Dr. Liaquat after MQM workers had ransacked offices of a private television channel in Karachi following the orders of their party chief, Altaf Hussain.
Earlier on Monday, Altaf Hussain addressed his party workers through a video call and allegedly spoke up against Pakistan. He raised anti-Pakistan slogans and urged his party workers to do the same. Incited by the hate speech, MQM workers spread chaos in the city, eventually resulting in the death of a person and widespread destruction.
Eventually, Rangers personnel had to step in to contain the situation and end the violence. Due to the crackdown, several MQM leaders will detained including Dr. Liaquat and Farooq Sattar.
A day after the fiasco, Altaf Hussain apologized to the military establishment including the army chief and he promised not to use anti-Pakistan slogans again.
