Peshawar doctors extract 22 metal, glass objects from 22-year-old patient

A surprising case in Peshawar has shocked many as a 22-year-old woman was found to have ingested metal and glass pieces including large nails and sharps pieces of glass.

The 22-year-old woman, a resident of Kurram Agency’s Parachinar area, complained of severe pain in her abdomen earlier this week and was rushed to Lady Reading Hospital. Due to the severity of the problem, she was taken to the Peshawar branch of the hospital.

After conducting physical examination and reviewing x-rays, it was found out that the woman had metallic objects in her stomach. The doctors decided to operate on her as soon as possible to prevent further poisoning from the objects.

A team of surgeons led by Dr. Sajjad operated on the woman and the procedure lasted for four hours. The doctors removed around 22 metallic objects from her stomach including large nails, hair pins and pieces of broken glass.

The woman is reported to be in stable condition but Dr. Sajjad revealed that her history showed that she suffered from mental illness and seizures.

The woman suffers from a condition known as Pica, in which the patient craves for and eats non-nutritive objects. The patient eats compulsively and the condition can have serious health implications as shown in this case.

The woman’s case comes just days after a similar case was witnessed in India’s Punjab province, in which a 40-year-old police officer suffered from similar abdominal pain. When he was operated upon, doctors found 40-folding knives in his stomach.
